The public sector, primarily state, territory and federal government, has additional requirements. These may be overlooked by some people, such as those transitioning from the private sector.

One good reason to aim for success rather than survival is that for some roles, such as some graduate programs, you will have to apply for a role at the end of the program. To maximise your chances of successfully completing your government role probation, here is a list of actions to consider, split between pre-start, first weeks, and the months ahead.

Much of this advice is usefully generic, and tends to target the private sector. Some details to understand about probation It is a critical part of the recruitment and selection process. Action to end employment during probation is a legitimate action. There is no legislative requirement in the APS for the length of the probation period. Most probation periods are three months.

The probation period should include some induction and assessment. For the APS, a decision needs to be made before the end of probation about whether a person is deemed suitable for appointment.
