At the time, Lois was pregnant with their son, Jonathan. Together, they survived yet another crucible and traveled back in time to the first Crisis at the end of Convergence 8. Their story could have ended there, but they wound up living out their lives nine years in the past of the New More importantly, it fully introduced readers to Jonathan Kent.

This allowed readers to see Superman as a father for the first time. It also gave fans a new way to experience the Superman mythos through the eyes of his son.

During the series, Jonathan learned the truth about his family heritage and his powers began to emerge. DC kicked off the new Rebirth era with 's Superman 1 , which further developed the new dynamic between father and son. For the first time, Superman had a true sidekick. Jonathan became an audience surrogate, especially for younger readers.

Superman had shared his adventures with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen for decades. This soon led to the truth about his father and he became the newest Superboy. The character of Jon Kent is one of the best things to come out of Convergence and Rebirth.

His dynamic with his father is perfect and he has a charming friendship with Batman's son , Damian. Unfortunately, Jonathan Kent's development was botched when the character was aged drastically to his teens after an event.

The original Superboy was not the son of Clark. The character was another one of the Supermen introduced upon the Man of Steel's death. Superboy would later become a member of the Young Justice comics. Over the years, Superboy has changed from a cocky and sarcastic rebel to a darker, more angry character. Both are great interpretations that tackle the struggles of identity being a clone. Later on, he gained the name Connor or Kon-El and learned to accept himself as his own person.

Of course, the most iconic of Superman's sidekicks is Supergirl. But, to be fair, the term of sidekick seems a bit reductive when referring to someone like Kara Zor-El. During a heart-to-heart in the Fortress of Solitude, Big Blue welcomed his clone hybrid into the family, bestowing him with a Kryptonian name and providing him a home in Smallville as Connor Kent. We know a lot about the Boy Wonder.

For example, he was inspired by Robin Hood and almost looked like Marlon Wayans. And of course, most famously, we know he has been Batman's faithful ward for over seventy years. But many people don't know that Robin has also worked as Superman's sidekick from time to time. While the Boy Wonder may consider the Dark Knight his mentor, he absolutely idolizes the Man of Steel and jumps at any chance to ride on his back. So influential has Superman been on Robin's career that he even inspired Dick Grayson to become Nightwing.

Most of their team-ups came during the Silver Age. The first of these happened in 's World's Finest Comics 75 when Batman cons his friends into believing he has a broken leg but is in fact dying from a terminal disease. This results in Superman taking his place and responding to the Bat-signal for a little while with Robin.

In a later issue, they re-team when Clark Kent is reporting on an antiwar demonstration at Robin's college, only for Superman to get abducted by some aliens seeking to drain him of his powers.

Luckily, Robin frees Supes long enough for him to destroy the villains using mental bolts. Superman has a lot of crazy powers. This new Dynamic Duo have had several more pairings that involved everything from fighting vampires to battling an evil circus, from Superman doing Robin's geometry homework to getting their own toy line.

Overall, throughout Robin's fifty-plus years of occasional Superman side-kicking, he's taught the Man of Steel the value of having a partner and provided us with this memorable fist bump. Superman and Supergirl have had a weird relationship over the years, especially during the Silver Age.

And it pretty much started right after Kara El-Zor landed on Earth. Despite being older than Kal-El and possibly even stronger , the older-looking Superman assumed parental authority over his female cousin, putting her in an orphanage and forbidding her to show any signs of her true identity. Then, whenever he would get in trouble or need assistance, the Creep of Steel would call upon Kara to help save the day, dubbing her his secret weapon.

Or as we like to call it - slave sidekick. Though that's not say their partnership wasn't incredibly successful, both on and off the page, quickly turning her into a fan favorite. Thanks in part to this growing popularity, Kara would eventually leave the orphanage and go off to college.

From there, the Girl of Steel forged a prosperous superheroic career of her own and a more healthy relationship with her cousin, even sacrificing herself to save him along with the rest of the universe during Crisis on Infinite Earths.

But for a time, this pre- Crisis affiliation between Superman and Supergirl was one of the most disturbing superhero pairings in comics. Besides Batman and Robin. James Bartholomew Olsen is the epitome of a good, loyal sidekick. After all, even Robin branched out on his own.

But not Jimmy. Everyone's favorite Daily Planet office boy, this budding photojournalist has always been destined to take a backseat to the likes of Lois and Clark, and act as a one-man cheerleading squad for the Man of Steel.

Nonetheless, Jimmy is one of the most iconic comic characters ever created. Though he may not possess any abilities of gallant worth or actively get involved in meaningful lifesaving pursuits other than, uh, needing to be rescued, Jimmy has burrowed a unique niche as an iconic sidekick on the premise of merely being a good friend.

This version has grown up and grown more powerful: His tactile telekinesis has increased to the point where he is able to create shields in addition to his fully developed Kryptonian powers. At some point, he and Captain Marvel Jr. His costume is very similar to the costume worn by Superman in the Kingdom Come comic book mini-series and Fleischer Studios 's version of the character. After the reappearance of the future Titans, a second alternate version is introduced as a clone created by Tim Drake, who was created after Conner died battling Superboy-Prime.

He and the other future Titans were sent by Luthor to make sure that their future still comes to pass as well as defeat an invading army of Starros. This future clone is later shot and killed by the future Batman Tim Drake , eliminating that version of Conner from existing.

However, another alternate future is shown where Tim decides he will take the mantle of Batman from Bruce Wayne by force and joins forces with Lex Luthor and Miss Martian.

Seen behind the group are clones of Conner Kent and Bart Allen as well as an unknown female. At first, Superboy's only superpower is "tactile telekinesis", a telekinetic force field that surrounds his body as a protective shield and allows him strength, flight and invulnerability.

Tactile telekinesis also allows Superboy to disassemble machines and other complex constructions by pushing the field between the individual parts; alternately, he can, for short periods of time, hold such constructs together if they are coming apart.

He can also manipulate aggregate solid masses such as volumes of sand or dust in the same way, causing the individual particles to fly apart in an explosive manner to create particle clouds or a forceful attack; he can also perform the same stunt with solid masses that are splintered, such as a cracked slab of concrete or fractured pane of glass.

The tactile TK field also lets Superboy break free of an opponent's grip by pushing the field outward to force the opponent away. Other creative uses include rendering an opponent immobile by extending the TK field as long as they are both standing on the same ground; a variation on this is to extend the protection of his field to another person by touching them. The main disadvantage of tactile telekinesis is that it is less effective in blocking energy including fire and the resulting heat than it is against solids, leaving Superboy slightly more susceptible to energy-based attacks.

It is also less effective against gaseous materials and liquids. However, near the end of his series he was able to create an air pocket around himself enabling him to breathe in outer space.

With only Tactile Telekinesis as his powers, at first, Superboy was only able to fly up to the speed of mph or so. Although it has been shown that Superboy can fly up to speeds approaching mach 3. He even displayed the ability to launch objects at high velocities in excess of mach 5.
